Job Description

Opportunity at a Glance
The Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager offers expert knowledge and skills in order to generate and promote a positive health and safety culture and represents a key role in helping to control occupational risk.   The EHS will analyze work environments to design and implement programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease, injury, and/or environmental impact caused by chemical, physical, radiological, and biological agents, ergonomic and/or other factors. Work may involve risk analysis, environmental program management, fire safety, emergency preparedness or other programs. This position may conduct inspections and inform the senior leadership team of areas that may not be in compliance with regulations and RUSVM policies.   The EHS Manager must be knowledgeable of EHS local and US federal rules and regulations; policies, accreditations and consensus requirements such as OSHA, ASHRAE, ANSI, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects/assesses, monitors, investigates and/or recommends corrective action; conducts trends analysis; documents compliance with standards; performs technical work, program design and implementation; accountability for outcomes of EHS issues.
  • Educates and trains employees in safety awareness and specific EHS requirements; may assess, develop, design, implement, and provide consulting services to management on safety topics.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of existing applicable policies and procedures, and maintains conditions that ensure a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Create new, and update existing internal health and safety policies, strategies and procedures.
  • Interprets and communicates information to individuals or groups; delivers presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience.  Clearly and concisely conveys written information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message. Listens and responds appropriately to others.
  • Acts as a resource to Managers and Supervisors when investigating/ recording incidents, accidents, complaints and cases of ill health and ensures the appropriate reports have been submitted.
  • Make recommendations following accidents/incidents to the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Compiles statistics.
  • Conducts or directs studies and statistical analysis to identify hazards and evaluate potential for loss; prepares report on findings.
  • Actively participates in health and safety meetings.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • This position is a designated Campus Security Authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

  • Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology Required or
  • closely related science; Required or
  • an equivalent combination of training and experience. Required
  • 5 years’ work experience in the role of an Environmental Health and Safety officer, preferably at an educational institution. Required
  • The successful candidate will be calm, patient and assertive, with excellent negotiation, communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Membership in the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Preferred
