Opportunity at a Glance


Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an Assistant Dean for Veterinary Education. The Assistant Dean will occupy an academic position at a rank appropriate for qualifications and experience. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, this is an exceptional opportunity to lead efforts in instructional support of faculty, enhancement of the DVM program, learner assessment and educational scholarship.

Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Dean for Veterinary Education will:
  • Provide support and direction of the Student Success Center, which is staffed by educational psychologists and provides instruction and guidance for students to improve their learning strategies and enhance their academic success. (The Student Success Center is separate and distinct from the Counseling Center.)
  • Work with individual DVM faculty to develop innovative approaches to sustain and promote excellence in educational programs and to make improvements in areas identified by students, faculty, alumni, employers and the veterinary profession (industry, organizations and other veterinary colleges)
  • a. Assist faculty in developing specific, observable and measurable learning outcomes for all courses
  • Oversee course and faculty teaching evaluations, review short and long-term teaching goals and course/session objectives, observe teaching in the moment, provide formal descriptive feedback and determine next steps in professional and course development
  • a. Help develop, refine and implement improved measures of teaching effectiveness, including student evaluation of teaching and peer review/observation
  • Provide leadership in educational scholarship
  • a. Develop a productive personal research program culminating in peer reviewed publications
  • b. Collaborate with faculty in design, implementation and evaluation of educational interventions
  • c. Collaborate with faculty and administration to secure funding to support education research
  • Assist the Associate Dean in curriculum design, program evaluation, course delivery and student success
  • a. Coordinate outcomes assessment of the DVM program in its broadest sense
  • b. Participate in accreditation-associated activities and reporting
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

  • PhD EdD, MS or similar degree/certification in education or a related field Required
  • 5+ years in veterinary education or direct field experience Required
  • Expertise in the principles of learning and instructional design, adult learner theory, educational research, and development and assessment of student learning objectives
  • Experience with technology-based instruction and evaluation
  • Publications relevant to education
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, effective critical thinking, sound judgment, receptivity and service orientation
  • Evidence of ability to build partnerships with those in other professional programs; to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff and students; to effectively plan, manage, and execute sound project plans; to demonstrate strong initiative; to lead others through change
  • Ability to advance the School’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through research, teaching and outreach with relevant programs, goals and activities.
  • Training/expertise in veterinary, medical or health care fields
  • Demonstrated ability to assess teaching efficacy and provide constructive feedback for improvement
  • Experience with grant writing
  • Participation in programs teaching professional skills and communication
  • Experience in designing strategies for measurement of programmatic outcomes
