Job Description
Overview:
The successful candidate will join the Department of Biomedical Sciences and a teaching and research team focused on One health and infectious diseases. The team includes bacteriologists, virologists, parasitologists, immunologists, epidemiologists and pathologists. The team also internally collaborates on teaching and research with colleagues in the Department of Clinical Sciences and externally with regional and international schools and research institutions with similar objectives. The successful applicant will have demonstrated expertise in clinical diagnostic microbiology and in teaching professional DVM and postgraduate students clinical bacteriology, and also have the ability to instruct students in the application of that knowledge to clinical practice. It is highly preferable that the candidate also be able to teach introductory virology lectures. The successful candidate will also contribute a portion of his/her time to the online Master’s in One Health. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate in local and international research programs, resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals, and to participate in Master’s and PhD programs. S/he may also contribute to the bacteriology diagnostic service delivered by the technical team within the Diagnostic Laboratory. S/he will report to the Head of Department, Biomedical Sciences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching (~60%):
• Participate in team-taught courses in Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology and Introduction to Microbiology (Virology Module)
• Participate in Essential Clinical Skills Laboratories (Bacteriology Module)
• Participate in Graduate Teaching (online Master’s in One Health)
• Participate and engage in other courses that the candidate might have skills, interests and qualifications
• Participate and engage in student centered interventional courses as needed
Research and Scholarly Activity (~30%):
• Intramural funding is available (upon application) and submission of grants for extramural funding is expected
• Develop an independent and/or collaborative research program resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Presentation of scientific findings at conferences
Administrative/Service (~10%):
• Contribute to the bacteriology diagnostic service delivered by the technical team within the Diagnostic Laboratory
• Engagement in service activities, including faculty meetings, assigned committees, and designated office hours are expected.
• Serve on postgraduate committees for Master’s and PhD students
• Completes other duties as determined and assigned by the Department and/or Division Head
Qualifications
A DVM or comparable degree (MD, Microbiology degree) with a PhD are essential, and a concentration of thesis work in the Veterinary Bacteriology/Microbiology field is highly desirable.• Post-doctoral training and
Diplomate status is highly desirable.
Experience in Clinical Diagnostic Bacteriology/Microbiology such as culture and isolation techniques, molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and automation
Track record of publishing in quality journals, as well as potential to collaborate or develop an independent research program
A strong commitment to meeting the needs of students and an understanding of student-centered learning, in collaboration with the existing bacteriology teaching team
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere
